PVI At Model Expo In Italy

In a message from Italy we learn that “…… PVI (Piloti Virtuali Italiani), the most important Italian Flight Simulation Association, to celebrate the 15° years of activity is organizing a “Flight Simulator Show” (FSS2010), that will be held in Verona (Italy) on March 6th and 7th 2010.
Our association organized this kind of events for several years; after a three years break, the Association decided to “get it back”, with the firm idea of making it a regular event for all FS enthusiasts and professionals, and not just a single show….”.
“….. This one is going to be a great event that will have, in foreground, not only PVI as organizer, but the whole world of Flight Simulation. An invitation has been sent to the leading manufacturers and distributors, to ensure to all visitors a great weekend of fun and involvement, a true “full immersion” into the Flight Simulation. Besides the booths, where you can see the latest products released, there is a substantial agenda of meetings and interactive demonstration to give the opportunity to everybody to see, and often to try, what the world of flight simulation can offer, today.

The Association will organize not only the presence of exhibitors, but will also set up a large number of workstations for Flight Simulation to be used by all visitors. It’s possible to try several Cockpit, “just alike” reconstructions of plane and helicopter cockpits that will “bring” the visitor into “a new dimension of Flight Simulation, giving the exact idea of the level of realism achieved.

The show, a brief introduction:
In some of the past editions, FSS got many famous names of the FS world as exhibitors, like Project Magenta, CPFlight, Engravity, Flight Illusion, XesaSystems, but also names like Microsoft, XP-Italia (official presence of X-Plane), IVAO, VATSIM, Saitek; many Virtual Airlines, Aero Clubs, several Organizations and Flight Schools. Of course always present was ENAV (the Italian Company for Air Navigation Services), Alenia Areonautica etc., as well as a many real and Flight Simulation enthusiasts, air traffic controllers and professional pilots.
Be the first to introduce to the public new products and/or organizations has always been one of the goals of this event; the last one was the “TileProxy Poject”, presented “on the stage” for the first time in Europe during the last edition. Cultural events complete the show, as “Prova a Volare” (“Try to Fly”), a very interesting exhibition about the history of Flight Simulation by the Air Museum “Gianni Caproni” (Trento – Italy).

The numbers:
The event is hosted “inside” another big event, the Model Expo Italy, a very important Hobby Model fair with visitors coming from all over Europe, a fair that “can count” on over 50.000 visitors and about 230 exhibitors (the “numbers” of the past edition).

The Booth:
It’s possible to choose among the following solutions: 3×3m, 6×6m, 8×3m and 10×3m, depending on your real needs and the availability at the moment you are going to confirm it. The exhibition area, the equipment, a “high speed” Internet access and AC power are provided totally free of charge. This opportunity is given to “no-profit” organizations, those who don’t sell their products at the booth; to get it, please fill the associations application form, here, and send it to the address indicated. A copy shall be also sent to flightsimulatorshow@pvi.it. If is your intention to be present as “Company”, then you need to apply for as “commercial” that you can find at this page.

Where to stay:
We got special fares at the Hotel Postumia, a new 3 Star Superior Hotel, strategically located near Verona “Valerio Catullo” Airport and the “Fiera di Verona”. Prices are: 40€ for a Twin room for single use, 50€ for a Twin or Double (25€ per person). To get this “special fare”, a request must be send at the e-mail address “segretario.operativo@pvi.it”, with your name, your phone number and your email address, as well as your check in/check out dates.

If you have any ideas or suggestions, if you have your own product or business that you want to “introduce to the public”, you are still on time! Please contact the organization as soon as possible and we will provide you logistical support for your ideas.  All requests must be submitted here: flightsimulatorshow@pvi.it.

This is an event that you can’t miss. See you at Flight Simulator Show 2010!…”.

FSDreamfactory’s Amsterdam Schiphol

Designer Cornel Grigoriu of Dreamfactorystudio is working on Mega Airport Amsterdam Schiphol and just sent the German simFlight team his ‘gold version’ of it for preview. Schiphol (for FS2004 for now) should pop up at Aerosoft’s shop within the next few days. If your curious, then have a look on the German simFlight forum here.

Why Does the Global Scenery Take 6 DVDs?

Periodically I see the question asked: why does the global scenery take up so many DVDs? Or more typically the question is: if it is so big, why is X missing, where X is the detail the user expected to see but did not find.

The size of X-Plane's global scenery is due to two factors:
  1. Some aspects of the scenery are very detailed, and this takes up disk space.
  2. Some aspects of the scenery are computed ahead of time, not by X-Plane, and this takes up disk space.
Big Data

A few data sources make the scenery pretty big:
  • The scenery is generated from 90m SRTM data for the entire world.
  • US scenery includes the entire US road grid.
  • Coastline data is fairly detailed in the US and for most oceanic coasts.
In other words, part of the size of the scenery comes from having reasonably accurate topography and coastlines everywhere.

Precomputation

The other source of file size is that X-Plane precomputes aspects of the scenery to reduce load on X-Plane while you fly. (We do this to improve frame rate.) In particular, the scenery uses a class of algorithms that are expensive to compute, and thus we compute them ahead of time and save the result (using up file space).
  • Land class changes not on a regular grid, but along iregular polygonal boundaries following the shape of the terrain. This produces much more natural terrain transitions in the mountain, but requires more storage.
  • "Auto-Gen" forests and buildings don't follow a grid - rather, they fit into the irregular spaces made by vector roads and water. This fitting process is too slow to run inside X-Plane, so every auto-gen building and forest area must be pre-computed and saved.
Room To Grow

One interesting side effect of saving the end results of building locations ("pre-placement", what X-Plane does) rather than the formula for how to place them ("auto-gen", what FS X does) is that we can make the placement algorithm for buildings significantly smarter without any increase in file size or decrease in frame-rate. Having already eaten the cost of putting every building into the DSFs, we can make those locations better without hurting performance.

That algorithm to pre-place buildings also can have access to source data that isn't available in the final DSF, allowing for effects that might not be possible in an auto-gen system.

FSX PROJECT AIRBUS A320 Condor/Thomas Cook (D-AICA)

FSX PROJECT AIRBUS A320 Condor/Thomas Cook (D-AICA) I know there are some good Condor/Thomas Cook liveries out there, but they never satisfied me 100%. So I decided to make a kind of livery pack for this airline, including different color schemes and logos. In this file there are 3 different liveries. The oldest livery I've included is from 2002, the second oldest from 2004 and the youngest is the current livery from 2009. Well I hope, that one of this three liveries will fit to your needs.
